A scalar times a vector is a vector; a dot product is a scalar; a vector plus a scalar is undefined. Half the lost marks in vector questions are one of those three written down as if it meant something.
Draw the diagram with every point and vector on it before you compute. To show two vectors are perpendicular, show the dot product is zero — with the direction vector, not with a position vector that happens to be nearby.
